Gardens and Castle of Le Touvet

At the end of a long, shaded alley, the majestic gardens and castle of Le Touvet rise majestically. Slightly overhanging the Grésivaudan valley, this place will be a most pleasant tourist excursion in the area of Allevard-les-Bains. This family home dating from 1750 has a charming period interior and exterior.

 

Beautiful gardens

Designed by Pierre de Marcieu, the representative of King Louis XV in Dauphiné, the gardens of the Château du Touvet are its main gems. They revolve around the majestic Italian-style water stairs, fed directly by the Chartreuse torrents. The architects have really staged the water the water features in gradients. From the top of the garden, the view of the Belledonne Massif is breath-taking and one can try to locate Allevard-les-Bains.

In summer, you can find some coolness by visiting the 5 hectares of park made up of precisely pruned yews, the rose garden, the countess’s garden or the vegetable garden and orchard.

A historic building

Although the Château du Touvet is famous for its gardens, this family building still retains all its charm of yesteryear. The parquet floors, gildings and other period features will take you on a magnificent journey back in time, far removed from the modern-day visitors’ numbers of the spa resort of Allevard-les-Bains.

Open to visitors, the castle, which remains a private and family residence, can be visited on Sundays and public holidays in low season and during summer every day except Fridays and Saturdays. During your visit, don’t be surprised if you see a bride and groom, the gardens and château du Touvet are among the most sought-after backdrops in the region for wedding photos.
